Emirati Women’s Day: History

Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, known as the "Mother of the Nation," and holding significant positions such as Chairwoman of the General Women's Union (GWU), President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation (FDF), founded Emirati Women's Day, which is observed on August 28 each year.

The purpose of Emirati Women's Day is to celebrate and honor the achievements, contributions, and advancements of women in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It serves as a platform to recognize the significant role that Emirati women play in various sectors of society, including politics, economy, education, healthcare, culture, and more.

Emirati Women's Day aims to highlight the progress that has been made in promoting gender equality and women's empowerment in the UAE. It also serves as an opportunity to raise awareness about the challenges that women might still face and the ongoing efforts to address those challenges.

This special day promotes the values of gender equality, women's rights, and the importance of creating an inclusive society where women have equal opportunities to contribute to the nation's development and growth. It's a time to celebrate the achievements of Emirati women who have broken barriers, shattered stereotypes, and excelled in various fields.

Additionally, Emirati Women's Day often features events, discussions, and initiatives that focus on empowering women, enhancing their skills and knowledge, and promoting their leadership roles. It encourages dialogue on important issues related to women's advancement and highlights the UAE's commitment to gender equality and women's rights.

In the context of the selected theme for 2023,  "We Collaborate for Tomorrow," this day also emphasizes the significance of collaboration among women and within the broader community to create a more sustainable and prosperous future for all.

2015: The first Emirati Women's Day was celebrated on August 28, 2015, marking the anniversary of the establishment of the General Women's Union (GWU) in 1975. The GWU is a prominent organization dedicated to advancing the status of women in the UAE. This inaugural celebration aimed to recognize the vital role that Emirati women have played in the country's progress and to promote gender equality and women's empowerment.

2016 and Beyond: In subsequent years, Emirati Women's Day continued to gain momentum, becoming an annual event that showcased the achievements and accomplishments of women across various sectors in the UAE. Each year, the day is celebrated under a different theme that reflects the values and aspirations of Emirati women. These themes often revolve around empowerment, leadership, innovation, and national development.

Themes and Recognition: The themes of Emirati Women's Day have varied over the years, addressing different aspects of women's roles and contributions. The day is typically marked by a series of events, seminars, workshops, and awards ceremonies that highlight the achievements of outstanding Emirati women. Notable women who have excelled in fields such as politics, business, arts, and academia are often recognized for their accomplishments and contributions.

Societal Impact: Emirati Women's Day has contributed to raising awareness about the importance of gender equality and promoting opportunities for women's advancement in the UAE. It has also served as a platform to address challenges that women might face and to foster dialogue on how to overcome them. The day's celebrations highlight the UAE's commitment to creating an inclusive and empowering environment for women to thrive.

In summary, Emirati Women's Day is a relatively recent but impactful initiative that acknowledges the role of Emirati women in the UAE's development and provides a platform for recognizing their contributions, promoting gender equality, and empowering women to continue shaping the nation's future.
