Special Feature: What We Can Learn from Egypt's Rise

Here's the arc: Egypt had never won a single World Cup match in its history before this year’s FIFA World Cup tournament — not in 1934, not in 1990, not in 2018. This year, they won their opener against New Zealand. Then held Belgium. Then beat Australia on penalties to reach the knockout stage for the first time ever.

Then, in the Round of 16 against defending champion Argentina, they went up 2–0 with fifteen minutes left, on the brink of eliminating Lionel Messi's team on the world's biggest stage. Then, Argentina scored three goals in thirteen minutes. The match ended 3–2.

I don't think the story here is the collapse. I think it's everything that happened before it.

For years, Egypt showed up to major tournaments and got sent home without so much as a win to their name. This year, they rewrote that. They didn't just qualify — they climbed, round by round, against tougher competition every single time, until they were minutes away from the biggest upset of the tournament.

That's the part worth sitting with if you're a high performer in a workplace that's historically underestimated you, or underestimated people like you.

Progress doesn't always end in the win you were chasing. Sometimes it ends in a gut-punch loss that still represents the furthest anyone in your position has ever gotten. Both of those things can be true in the same night. My personal experience with this is profound.

Eagles don't measure a season by whether they caught the biggest prey. They measure it by how much higher they were flying than the year before.

Egypt's players didn't lose because they weren't good enough to be there. They lost in the final minutes of a match they had no business making that close. That's not failure. That's a NEW CEILING — one that the next generation of Egyptian players now gets to try to break through.

If you're rebuilding your standing somewhere that's counted you out before, take the lesson from Cairo this week: rise anyway, even when the ending isn't the one you wanted. The climb still counts. The NEW CEILING is yours to reach. And then the next one starts higher than this one did.

Have you ever made real, undeniable progress somewhere — only to have it end in a result that still stung? How did you carry that forward?
